File/Start a LLC in California
Promise, this is a super easy, stress free process!
If you know anything about our story, we have changed countries once and states 3 times in the last 5 years… Blah, blah …. The short of that long tale would be:
I have done this process a few times, in a few states!
5 simple steps:
- Name your LLC.
This is completely up to you!
- File ‘Articles of Organization‘ with the State of California.
Since we live so close to Sacramento, I opted to drop off & pick up. So I can say if you do it that way, I had received a call back to pick up my form exactly 5 days from when I dropped it off. In reading the instructions that come with the form, it says if mailed, it would take them 5 days to process and then however long it would take to mail it back to you. Also should mention that it is a cost of $70 & $15 service fee.
- Within 90 days of filing the ‘Articles of Organization’, you will need to file an ‘Initial Statement of Information‘
I had filled this form filled out and ready to file once I got my hands on my ‘Articles of Organization’ form back. Once I got my call back, I simply picked up my form and dropped off the ‘Initial Statement of Information’. The fee was $20 for this form. Would like to mention that I had got a certified copy, as I was directed by the financial institution that I was opening a business account at, requested I have a copy of this form, an additional $5.
- Create an ‘Operating Agreement’, a requirement in California to all LLC’s!
You can create one on your own or you can fill-in-the-blanks with your information, on the one I use – you choose! For a FREE fill-in-the-blanks PDF, click here!
- Get an EIN (Employer Identification Number)
An EIN is basically your LLC’s social security # for your business. If you already have one, HIGH 5! If not, you may wonder why you would need one?
You need an EIN when:
a) filing state & federal taxes
b)to open Business Bank account
Promise it is super easy to get & is free online or print this form & pop it in the mail!
